Bayreuth may be small, but its most famous cocktails are smaller! Kanapee bar serves shot cocktails of 2cl for 1.80€. Don't let the fancy colours trick you, there's no juice to water this down – just alcohol mixed with alcohol and, yes, more alcohol. Cheap way to get a headache but so quirky you have to try it. Also probably the last place to close in Bayreuth if you fancy a night cap.
This summer I'm excited to work for Bayreuth Festival as a men's tailor! Although I'm trained as a women's wear tailor, opera people are open minded and here's my chance to foray into something new!
Of course, in order to do good work you need to enjoy a good life. Thankfully, Bavaria (or Frankonia!) is amazing to visit in summer. Although Bayreuth is the 2nd coldest place in Germany I can say that so far the weather has been quite tropical. Swimming in nearby open air pools or lakes is bliss.
The Goldbergsee in Marktschorgast is an accidental lake that happened when a controlled explosion in a quarry got a little out of control – water rushes in and voilà, a lake! The green space around it is carefully managed, there's a pool for children, showers, a snack bar and all the usual spoils of a lido and of course, a life guard. The lake is surrounded by rock and trees, and a few gold fish enjoy a swim with you in refreshingly cold, i.e., icy, water.
A traditional feature are the tree trunks floating in the water. Apparently, if you manage to sit on top of them, you are as much a local as you can get. Here's proof of us blending right in Anna Meyer, men's cutter, Nuria Trüb, women's cutter, and me.
